Some love stories begin with fireworks. Mason and Tish's began with casebooks, lectures, and long hours spent navigating their final year of law school together.
As their relationship grew, so did their adventures. Memorable road trips from Colorado to Oregon to visit Mason's family in Bend and discover the beauty of the high desert became unforgettable experiences.
With each visit, Tish found herself falling in love. Not only with Mason and his hometown, but with the rugged landscapes, sage covered valleys, and sense of peace that makes the heart of Oregon so special.
It was during one of those adventures that their journey took a beautiful turn. While exploring the Skylight Cave, Mason led Tish beneath one of the cave’s famous beams of sunlight. He asked her to step into the light for what she believed would be a simple photograph. As she smiled for the photo, Mason surprised her by dropping to one knee. In that surreal moment, beneath a radiant shaft of natural light, he pulled a ring from his pocket. As he offered it to Tish, the diamond caught the sunbeam and shimmered as if the light itself had found a new home.
Mason, a now confident attorney, searched for the words he had practiced so many times before. But in the gravity of the moment, they had escaped him. Tish, sensing his beautiful vulnerability, bent down and whispered her answer into his ear. Yes...
Two years later, it was time to decide. A venue, wedding planner, vendors and a Bend Oregon Officiant of the most coveted wedding venues in the high desert, Faith Hope & Charity Vineyard in Terrebonne, Oregon. As a Central Oregon wedding officiant with Promised and Pronounced, I have had the pleasure of officiating for extraordinary couples who are truly meant for one another. Mason and Tish's were one of those couples.
Early on, one of the things that struck me most was their compatibility, often shown through silly smirks and half-smiles born from inside jokes and a language all their own.
Mason and Tish could have chosen any wedding venue location in Central Oregon.
Usually in complete agreement, the couple found themselves disagreeing over whether to hold an unforgettable ceremony inside the 60,000-year-old lava cave at Juniper Preserve Ridge or an enchanting celebration at Faith Hope & Charity Vineyards. As attorneys often do, they negotiated with each other and ultimately chose Faith Hope & Charity Vineyard because of its uninterrupted views of the high desert landscape and the Cascade mountain range.
They valued that, unlike many resort-style venues, Faith Hope & Charity provided something increasingly rare: complete privacy. When reserved exclusively, couples and their guests can enjoy fifteen acres of beautifully manicured grounds, picturesque ponds, and cascading waterfalls.
In late June on the evening of their wedding, mother nature sent a cool breeze through out the vineyard. The scent of desert sage, fresh-cut grass and juniper filled the air. The golden hour sun gently painted warm honey-colored light onto the estate while family and friends in elegant black-tie attire gathered, anticipating the moment they had all come to witness.
Soon everyone was seated. In traditional fashion the wedding party took there place at the alter. The music faded out and a hush came over the crowd as Tish appeared at the ceremony entrance. I interrupted the silence, “All rise for the bride.” Mason’s eyes found hers immediately. There she stood, radiant and smiling arm and arm with her father, a towering pillar of the family.
But instead of beginning her walk, Tish paused and waited as the DJ played their song, "Turning Page" by Sleeping at Last.
In a gesture that was both thoughtful and unexpected, she substituted the traditional bridal march with what she and Mason regarded as their song. Tish waited while we all listened to what she wanted Mason and their guests to understand. Mason was surprised and immediately moved to tears.
Within moments Tish and Mason exchanged one of their knowing half smiles. Afterwards she held her father's arm a little bit tighter and he proudly walked her up the aisle.
The setting sun illuminated her gown and veil, creating a scene that felt cinematic.
As the ceremony continued, guests listened intently. Couples instinctively reached for one another's hands. Smiles spread across faces throughout the audience as Mason and Tish exchanged rings and spoke repeat after me vows.
Rather than reading their own personally written vows aloud, Mason and Tish chose a more intimate tradition. Each had written a love letter to the other. During their ceremony, the letters were placed inside a keepsake box alongside a bottle of fine red wine. Together, they promised to read the letters privately on their wedding night and revisit them each year on their anniversary, creating a tradition that would allow them to relive the memories of this day for years to come.
There was a palpable sense of connection in the air, a reminder of why wedding ceremonies continue to hold such meaning for all who witness them.
As the sun dipped behind the mountains, shades of blue, blush, and lavender filed the horizon.
At last the moment arrived, I spoke the words every couple waits to hear,
"I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss your bride." The vineyard erupted in applause and cheers. The celebration was so enthusiastic that a toddler seated in the front row was completely taken by surprise. He screamed and covered his face with his mother's shawl as laughter rippled through the crowd.
As guests made their way toward the reception, the sun set behind the Three Sisters, glasses clinked. Conversations flowed. The night sky now carried laughter, conversation, and song across the property while family and friends celebrated the beginning of a new chapter.
After the ceremony, Mason and Tish expressed that Faith Hope & Charity Vineyard was more than a beautiful backdrop; it became a symbol of their journey together. Tish later pulled me aside, hugged me, and said, "We relied on you to capture the essence of our relationship in a setting straight out of a romance novel. 'Thank you' barely scratches the surface of our gratitude."
Another happy couple, promised and pronounced, tethered together in the loyalty of one another's love.
